I’m starting to think that Pest Productions has all the good Chinese bands :)
This album is great. You have the Chinese motifs, black metal, and the delivery of the lyrics, in that “forward way”. Something something something, this band is inspired by Judas Iscariot, so I have that to look forward too!
The rabbit hole goes deeper, there’s “Anaesthetization” by Heartless, and one of my favorite albums ever Dismal’s “遺。白”. Both of these albums are DSBM, and both of them are very dear to my heart.
Imma talk about Dismal later, but let’s just say that the screams in the track “白” still send a chill up my spine. I love that album so much, and the art? The art is something else.
You ever hear an album so good, it makes you smile? This album put a wide grin on my face, so there’s that!
That intro in “飛將 / The Flying General” something else am I right? This album is filled with Chinese motifs, and overall is just great. Also it was created by a 19 year old, alone. So like, I’m definitely gonna keep an eye on Welkin.
What about that riff in [赤壁 / 208 Battle of Red Cliffs] at 5:00? Amazing stuff.
At this point, I have listened to “Day” by Katatonia for more than 30 times. And the number keeps increasing. I put it on loop and it never seems boring or repetitive. It just works. There’s also a GODLY ambient DSBM cover by Frostagrath, it has two vocalists, and two vocal styles. Clean and harsh, the atmosphere and the synth is really nice to listen to. It’s an entire track on its own different from Katatonia’s. It’s wonderfully depressive, and I’m definitely gonna keep up with Frostagarth.
